Michigan’s Best Local Eats: Vegano Italiano brings New York-style vegan pizza to Ypsilanti

YPSILANTI, MI – With 20-inch New York-style pizza and pesto pasta, Vegano Italiano has experienced an “amazing” few months since it opened, according to owner Maryrose Angelo.

Vegano Italiano, opened in Ypsilanti in October 2021. True to its name, the restaurant serves up a variety of vegan Italian food, including pesto pasta, eggplant cutlets and vegetable lasagna.

Fan favorites thus far have included the meatball sub, Utica riggies, tzatziki fries and the 20-inch New York-style cheese pizza, a recent addition to the menu. Angelo has also added macaroni and cheese and a roasted red pepper melt sandwich to available options.

Many of her menu items are high protein, Angelo said, bolstered by swaps like chickpea flour for wheat flour and the addition of pine nuts and a variety of beans. Other swaps include using a house-made almond-based ricotta and Violife, an allergy-friendly cheese alternative, for dishes with mozzarella or smoked provolone.

Vegano Italiano also carries baked goods from Botanical Bakeshop, an all-vegan bakery based in Milan.

The Ypsilanti community has received the vegan restaurant well, Angelo said.

“The community itself has been great,” Angelo said. “We’ve had people from all over Michigan. We’ve had people from (Mount) Clemens, up from Saginaw area, from the west side, all have traveled out here. So it’s been amazing, and I think it’s pretty cool that people picked us as a travel destination. ”

Although Vegano Italiano is currently take-out only, Angelo does have plans to move into a full-service restaurant. She also plans to introduce Saturday lunch specials in the near future.

“We just started looking for some locations that have dining options, which would allow us to expand the menu quite a bit and do some different items,” Angelo said. “So stay tuned.”
